Joseph Kavinsky
Kavinsky, on the other hand, ruled the night. He lived in the places that wouldn’t even occur to Gansey: in the back parking lots of the public schools, the basements of McMansions, crouched behind the doors of public bathrooms. Kavinsky’s kingdom was not so much conducted in the red-yellow-green glow of a traffic light, but in the black place just outside of the glow.

Personality
• Dislikes being called Joey because his parents call him that
• Dislikes being called Joe, too
• Dislikes his first name altogether, really; 'Joseph' feels old-fashioned and stuffy to him
• His opinion on these things could be changed under the right circumstances and with the right people
• The only variation/nickname based on his first name that he'll accept is Josy/Josey, usually from a significant other or close friend
• Doesn't let anyone tell him who he is
• Used to think of himself as a god at some points in his life, when he was more euphoric about his dream powers
• However, he knows everything isn't really or always that great, and also acknowledges things like being a monster--something he usually isn't ashamed of
• He does worry that all of the other insults hurled at him are true though and that he really is worthless/trash/etc. There's a big difference between acknowledging he's done some messed up things or isn't the nicest person, and people trying to tear him down or attack his worth
• Secretly worried that no one will love him
• Has never had a real relationship, just casual sex
• 'Secretly' loves having his hair petted and touched
• Hates being alone but constantly feels alone, sometimes even around his pack or in the middle of a party
• Struggles with depression; not properly diagnosed or medicated
• A lot of his taunts and insults against Ronan and Gansey spawn from jealousy and bitterness at Gansey being friends with Ronan, the way Ronan seems to be wrapped around Gansey's finger and also seems to value his opinion/be concerned with what Gansey thinks to an unhealthy degree. K just wants Ronan to give him a chance, for friendship and potentially more, and for Ronan to take Gansey down from the pedestal he's put him on
• Absolutely loves animals, as in, likes them more than he does people most of the time
• Has always wanted a dog but is too afraid to get one after what happened when he was a child
• Isn't really an outdoors sort of guy and wouldn't know the first thing about camping/farming/etc
• However, he's really into things like nature, the stars, and art
• Prefers pepperoni and sausage on his pizzas
• Prefers action movies, the kind with obligatory car chase scenes or vehicles of some sort involved in a chase. Alternately, movies with street racing are just as good
• Likes horror movies second best, but usually the cheesy ones as opposed to things that are genuinely frightening. They're a good excuse to get close to people, either way
• Considers Prokopenko his best friend and cares about him a lot
• Their friendship grew stronger after Proko became a dream thing, though some of Kavinsky's dedication to him is guilt over the events surrounding Proko's death and the fact K couldn't prevent it, that he could only try to fix things after the fact. His protective streak runs wide and deep; he doesn't ever want to go through losing Proko (or anyone he cares about) a second time
• Assuming he finds out that dreams fall into a coma without their dreamers, he'd do anything to ensure Proko is capable of having a long, healthy life without him

History
• The first thing he dreamed up that he can remember is a puppy, which his father promptly killed
• Was always called a freak by his father before Mr Kavinsky became a dreamthing. It was a purposeful change, among other things, to make sure his father would never hurt him again
• Has always had a fondness for dragons and used to have them in his dreams a lot, starting when he was very young. In fact, a little shoulder dragon was the closest he ever came to having a proper psychopomp, before he grew older and his depression and general anger at the world and himself grew and twisted everything until his dreamspace and the dragons were poisoned with it and they turned against him. His self-loathing infecting the dragons and causing them to hate him too ended up pushing him to learn how to suppress them and keep them out of his dreams for his own safety
• His neutral dreamspace is a destroyed neighborhood with some buildings on fire; the street is dotted with abandoned cars; the sky is a psychedelic trip of swirling vibrant colors; beyond the edges of the neighborhood is a stretch of nothing but empty fields and then thick forests
• Speaks Bulgarian because his father does, and thus his father made it a point for Kavinsky to learn as well. He typically doesn't speak it around his peers often, though--usually just the dreampack
• Also speaks a decent amount of Ukrainian (which he's learning from Prokopenko) and some Russian (also learned from his father, due to many of his father's business dealings/conversations happening in Russian)
• Has heard mentions of Boudicca, thanks to his father, but doesn't know much about them
• Has been to the Fairy Market a grand total of once and never wants to go back
• Killed his father in self-defense when he was twelve and his father pulled a gun on him with every intention of shooting him
• This incident led to the newly dreamed copy of his father insisting that Kavinsky and his mother move from New Jersey--something Kavinsky was on board with but his mother was not. Ultimately, they ended up moving to Henrietta, though Mrs Kavinsky treated her son even worse than before
• Met Swan first, and Swan introduced him to Skov shortly after. From there, at Kavinsky's request, Skov introduced him to Jiang after Jiang caught his eye. When K was fifteen, he met Prokopenko, after Proko and his family moved to Henrietta
• As the new kid at Aglionby/in Henrietta, he got into a lot of fights before he befriended Swan, and later Prokopenko
• After they became friends, Swan fought a lot of Kavinsky's battles for him, defended him, and got revenge on people who had beaten him up or been dicks to him. These are all things Kavinsky's forever grateful for, but has never really known how to thank Swan for in so many words
• Kavinsky is perfectly capable of fighting his own fights most of the time, of course, but Swan is bigger, taller, stronger, and generally more intimidating
• Similarly, Proko is also taller and stronger than K and more relentless. Combined with Swan, K has found himself with a pair of active protectors
• Proko's death at 17 was both an accident and avoidable, which contribute to Kavinsky's deep-seated guilt over the whole thing. The two of them were hanging out at Kavinsky's one night while his mother was out, drinking and getting a little high. Proko had too much to drink, and he and Kavinsky were messing around, playfully rough-housing. Though K made sure to keep the memory from Proko when he dreamed a copy of him after the fact, he'll always remember feeling like he's responsible for causing Proko to lose his balance and hit his head on the edge of the table
• He buried Proko in the backyard before dreaming the copy, and since Proko's never asked, Kavinsky's never told him about the location of his body
