The Dream Thieves
Personality: (CWs: murder, attempted murder, mental health struggles, drugs, addiction, and child abuse)
+Default emotional state and temperament: On the surface, Kavinsky is typically rude, crude, and abrasive. Basically, he's an asshole who gives off the impression he cares very little about others, including what they think of him. He's described as violent, but isn't actually shown being violent except on a bare handful of occasions, the primary one being self-defense. He has no issues letting people know what he thinks of them, and also isn't afraid to sweet talk people to get what he wants. Due to a multitude of issues that lurk beneath the surface, he leans heavily into a life of pleasure for every distraction it can offer him. He's stated that his life is primarily sex, drugs, and cars, but he knows that's not enough. He knows his life is otherwise empty and that these distractions can only carry him so far before the entertainment value wears off, but he doesn't know how to properly handle his problems.
Beneath the layers and the walls Kavinsky has put up, he's struggling with things such as drug addiction, mental health issues, the rampant racism he faces nearly every day in Henrietta, and internalized homophobia (he's bi), also due to the general attitude of people in town. Nobody is kind to him and so Kavinsky isn't kind to himself; he doesn't know how to be. His mother is abusive and his father's tried to kill him once, so his home life is also shitty. He has insecurities and issues with self-loathing, none of which he ever addresses.
Despite his reputation and the rumors, he lets ambulances and the police set up near his larger, more popular parties, such as the 4th of July, to ensure that nothing terrible happens. It's stated that statistically, you're probably not going to die at any of his parties. This has always read like he cares about people a lot more than he tends to let on. And while he has a few close friends, and seems to be good to them, he holds everyone else at arm's length, most likely due to the way everyone else treats him. He's not stupid, after all; he knows people think he's trash or a monster, and neither of those are an exaggeration. He sells drugs and forgeries recreationally, probably for a steep discount because he enjoys it. He enjoys doing things for people.
He has a grand total of four actual friends, who are referred to as his pack of dogs. They're also one referred to as his family, and Kavinsky states that he hates being alone. His best friend is Prokopenko, whose family is from Ukraine, and he and Kavinsky had been close their entire friendship. But after an unspecified event took Proko's life, Kavinsky dreamed a copy of him back, calling him his favorite forgery and implying he couldn't stand the thought of being without Proko.
+Motivations and goals: Kavinsky's aspirations are vaguely hinted at during the scene where he's attempting to teach Ronan how to dream better. Kavinsky shows him a dreamt Aglionby diploma, framed, that says he graduated with honors. If he'd ever made it to an actual graduation, he likely would have wanted to continue his education and go to college.
Kavinsky also desires kinship and to not be alone. He wants to be able to have someone in his life who understands dreaming in the way Kavinsky can use it, which is part of why he pursues Ronan. The other part is, naturally, Ronan's hot and Kavinsky's trying to work through his sexuality. Either way though, Kavinsky desperately wants someone he can be himself with, someone who he can talk to about dreaming and how isolating that's been for his whole life, but also someone who would appreciate him and his magic.
+Regrets and fears: Kavinsky is afraid of his father, and would have been about thirteen at the time he tried to kill Kavinsky, which was a traumatic event. He was never fond of his father in general, and his father never treated him well. Kavinsky is also afraid of being shunned or alone for his whole life, and worries that he's unlovable. He doesn't want people to see him the way he sees himself, or for them to think he actually is a monster or a freak. This is partially why he's hesitant to tell people he's a dreamer.
+Breaking points: He can handle a lot of shit-talking and insults without actually losing his temper and lashing out, but there is a limit to what he can take. He greatly dislikes remarks that imply or state being queer or having magic is something to be ashamed of, or makes someone a freak. He's heard too much of that shit while growing up. Similarly, losing someone he cares about or seeing them hurting, is the sort of thing that'd bring him to tears.
+Values: Kavinsky values honesty, loyalty, and empathy. He might not always be honest himself, but he tries to be when it really counts, and he appreciates the same from others. He also considers loyalty very important, being able to trust someone and know they have his back. He might be a bully sometimes, but empathy and looking out for others means a lot to him, too, and he does what he can.
+How do they handle change and trauma? Kavinsky has been treated like some sort of freak or monster for more or less his whole life, having grown up a dreamer with parents who don't love or support him, and instead are abusive. Becoming an actual monster after all of that might not actually be so rough on him, especially since there are people here he could talk to about it, and he wouldn't have to deal with the stress of keeping it a secret.
Powers/Abilities:
Mundane:
♔ He's a skilled driver and by extension a good street racer
♔ He's comfortable with guns and is a decent shot with good aim
♔ He has an eye for details, both in the traits of objects and things like when someone's upset, etc
♔ He's multilingual, and speaks primarily English and Bulgarian, and also some Ukrainian, Russian, and Latin
Supernatural:
♔ Being a dreamer means that Kavinsky can bring back anything he wants from his dreams (and sometimes things he doesn't want/didn't intend to bring back; accidents happen). Dreaming things is a lot about intention, and intention can be better than knowledge, ie, he can dream something with the intent for it to work a certain way without the knowledge of how it would work that way (there's a lot of room for error though, and that doesn't always work out).
That said, Kavinsky is able to dream things such as: people (copies rather than a whole new original person), fireworks, forgeries, weapons, cars, drugs, alcohol, fantastical things, and mundane things. The general rule is 'if it works in the dream, it works in real life'. Kavinsky's expertise, as it was, is mostly drugs and forgeries, with a few other things sprinkled in. However, his dreaming ability is weaker away from ley lines, and it's possible to sap a line of its power when close to one by dreaming too much too quickly. So it'd be easy to toss in a few nerfs like 'no sentient things that need their own app, no army of pets, nothing that would break the setting, nothing that would take the fun out of things (like no endless supplies or fixes for things, etc)' which I'm totally okay with! Kavinsky's happy enough dreaming drugs and more-or-less useless mundane and/or fantastical things like sunglasses or forgeries. The dreaming is important to him, but I also try to do my best to not make it too much in games.
♔ Dreamers can dream together, usually only with other dreamers, but psychics can also join their dreams. They can keep other people out though if they want to--I generally think of it as a mental door you can either just leave open or lock.
♔ Dreamt objects and living things have a certain sound/feel to them that dreamers and psychopomps (which Kavinsky does not have; psychopomps are things, usually alive, that help dreamers dream better) are able to sense. IE, if Kavinsky came across something another dreamer created, he would be able to pick up on the subtle signs of it being a dream thing.
Inventory: Clothes (everything but a shirt), jewelry (gold chain necklace, one small gold earring), white rimmed sunglasses, and the contents of his pockets (phone, wallet, keys, and a small handful of green pills that, upon consumption, will immediately knock someone out and briefly stop their pulse--these aren't nefarious; they're for him when he needs to get to sleep asap to dream, and he regularly dreams more of these pills)
Game Plans: Friends, give this boy friends and the chance to socialize with people who don't immediately judge him based on his reputation because he has no reputation here. Also, I like the idea of him getting to embrace monster things in a positive way, rather than the insulting way people have treated him back home. People he could befriend and trust enough to tell them about being a dreamer would be *chef's kiss*, also. So would the chance for Kavinsky to be more than a gremlin, to be soft with people, to be happy and have positive character growth.
Monster Choice:
Elemental: Genasi (fire) - My top choice. Kavinsky has a lot of connections with fire, and associations like bonfires, molotovs, explosions, fireworks, etc. He loves fire, too, and it fits his personality; he's fiery and fierce. Fire can be wild and destructive, but it can also be beneficial and necessary, which could also describe Kavinsky's more protective side.
Drakonis: Dragon - Second choice. Kavinsky has more emotional ties to dragons than anything. The last thing he ever dreams is a dragon made of fire, but I also tend to associate him with dragons in general, leaning into Bulgarian folklore.
Taurus: Satyr - Third choice; the party boy choice. Satyr meshes with the hedonistic side of Kavinsky, his craving for music and entertainment and partying.
Vehicle Choice: A white Mitsubishi Lan Evo with a large knife decal across one side (the license plate reads 'thief'). The trait is 'fast'.
